🏀 Homeschool Sports & Activities in Louisiana
Whether Louisiana homeschool students can play public school sports and join activities and classes, and the rules that apply — from our Louisiana guide.
Sports and special education for home study students
Sports: a public school may not disqualify a student from extracurricular activities or interscholastic athletics only because the student is in a BESE-approved home study program, as long as the student lives in that school's attendance zone (La. R.S. 17:176.2). The student tries out or applies in the same manner, at the same time and place as students who attend the school. Once on a team or club, the student must meet every requirement enrolled students meet, including a minimum grade point average and discipline standards, and the school can remove a student who doesn't. No public school may belong to, or compete in events run by, an athletic association that denies eligibility solely because a student is in approved home study. Act 545 of 2026 (HB 363), effective August 1, 2026, extends these rules to virtual school students. The law defines an approved home study program as one approved under R.S. 17:236.1, so if your family operates as a nonpublic school not seeking state approval, ask the school and district before tryouts. Ask the school's athletic director which LHSAA forms and deadlines apply.
