Sports and special education for home study students
Special education: Georgia treats children who are home schooled within a school district as parentally placed private school students for special education (Ga. Comp. R. & Regs. 160-4-7-.13). Districts must include children who live in the district and are in home study in child find, so you can ask your district to evaluate a child you think may have a disability (160-4-7-.03). Home study students have no individual right to the special education and related services they would get in public school. Instead, each district spends a proportionate share of its federal IDEA money on parentally placed children, decides which services to offer after consulting with private school representatives and parents, and writes a services plan for each child it chooses to serve (160-4-7-.13). Ask your district's special education office what it offers home study students this year.
