Sports: independent study students can play for the public school serving their home attendance area under CIF Bylaw 302, if the local board accepts their registration, their courses meet board standards and they meet all other CIF rules. State regulations bar schools from excluding independent study students from sports and activities at the school where they are enrolled (5 CCR 11701.5, as quoted by CDE). Students in a home-based private school should check the current CIF bylaws with their CIF section.

If you want to enroll full time, the LEA where you live would generally have to make FAPE available.
