🧩 Special Needs & Special Education Homeschooling in Alabama
What Alabama offers homeschool families of children with disabilities or learning differences — special-needs scholarships, evaluations and services — from our Alabama guide and articles.
Sports, driver's licenses and special education
Special education: school districts must include children whose parents placed them in private schools, including religious schools, in child find. These children have no individual right to the services they would get in public school, but they share in equitable services the district provides (Ala. Admin. Code 290-8-9). If the parent of a homeschooled or privately placed child declines consent for an evaluation, the district can't override that. Ask your district how it treats church-school students. CHOOSE students with an IEP or 504 plan remain eligible for district special education services under federal and state law (16-6J-3(h)), and the first 500 CHOOSE awards each year are reserved for them.
